CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Aisling scanned the room in a repeating pattern, front, side, back, then the same in reverse, much like she imagined the polite line of security that stood in front of the Prime Minister’s podium with their gaze on the crowd was doing. In her experience, guards were usually less obvious or at least less numerous at events like this. She wondered if the threat they’d created from rumor was the cause or if this was how they did everything. She guessed those guards weren’t Mossad but probably the Israeli version of the US Secret Service.

It occurred to Aisling that she was still relatively uneducated in the world of espionage she’d been dumped into. Then again, she’d been more or less running full speed since the moment she’d joined Dragonfly. It’s not like they gave her a nice week off now and again to read up on things. She laughed inwardly at the notion of Lance reading, imagining him poking at a book and expecting it to do something, and restrained herself from commenting about it.

All attention turned to the Prime Minister when he began talking. Aisling waited the five minutes that Will had ordered, then faded out the back door nearest her and headed for the portion of the building she’d claimed.

While preparing for the event, they accessed floor plans and selected areas of responsibility. Hers was the part of the hotel nearest the main service area. They’d agreed it was unlikely the device would be in the basement since that would make bringing the DragonEye into play more difficult. It also wasn’t likely to be in any guest rooms on the floors above for the same reason. Since its purpose was to protect the Prime Minister, it would be somewhere nearby.

She smiled and nodded at the workers she passed. Her air of purpose and authority allowed her to reach her destination unchallenged. The area was a long hallway with oversized doors on both sides. She moved down it opening doors and found nothing exciting, only walk-in closets containing cleaning supplies, laundry, and other hotel operation essentials.

Aisling had finished the first block of rooms and was headed to the second when Isla whispered, “We’ve got trouble.”

She ducked into a closet. “What’s up?”

“A bunch of people entered the restricted part of the lobby. They’re in two groups and came in from the sides, so they were already in the hotel or someone let them in. They didn’t go through the security post.”

Will advised, “On my way.”

Aisling replied, “Damn. Me too.” They would at least need to shout an alarm if this was a real attack, whether or not they’d inspired it. They’d set the stage for one and were responsible for ensuring things didn’t spiral out of control.

When she got to the lobby, Aisling saw four groups of four people who didn’t belong. They looked hard, military or ex-military, maybe mercenaries. She didn’t get a sense that they were magicals and said as much.

Maria replied, “I wonder if we stumbled into the middle of some other attack.
